DevOps System Engineer

Position Summary:
Tesla Government Inc. is seeking a talented individual to help us deploy our software. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with dedication to quality and a desire to be part of a rapidly growing company.

The place of work is in the Vienna/Tysons Corner area and is Metro accessible on the Silver Line (Springhill Metro).

Core Requirements:


  • Battle-proven real-life experience running an Internet-facing production system

  • Deep expertise with either Linux or Windows servers (system is about 2/3 Linux, 1/3 Windows) and a desire to learn the systems you don’t already know

  • Expertise automating system administration tasks

  • Education and work history exhibiting both system administration and software development, 10 to 20 years total

  • Insatiable curiosity

  • Little tolerance for repetitive work

  • U.S. citizen eligible for a government security clearance (No clearance needed to start. We can hold up to a TS/SCI if you already have one.)


Some of the kinds of work the DevOps staff do here include:


  • Participate in a team of about 15 IT professionals including 3 DevOps engineers supporting a small company of roughly 50 people who run an unclassified but private Internet based information system for the U.S. government.

  • Maintain and improve Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) virtual servers in an Amazon Web Services EC2 environment. 

  • Maintain and improve Microsoft Windows 2012R2 virtual servers in an AWS environment.

  • Maintain AWS RDS MySQL databases

  • Automate Tenable Nessus/ACAS scanning and reporting for server vulnerabilities and compliance with DISA STIGs and NIST Special Publication 800-53 controls. And of course, fix the problems found!

  • Automate and maintain packaging Linux software in Jenkins with rpmbuild and deployment to custom internal repos.

  • Maintain and improve active directory group policy objects for managing the Windows servers.

  • Help Java developers automate deployment and operation of Apache Tomcat applications.

  • Automate reconfiguration and operation of Apache httpd and NGINX servers.

  • Support the agile development process and tools including Git and Atlassian Jira.

  • Automate ETL processes for ESRI ArcGIS and BAE GXP Xplorer.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation to handle the rare after-hours outage.  With Tesla’s “open PTO” plan, all outage response work counts towards the annual 1880 hours requirement which, so long as you meet it, allows you to take as much paid time off as you desire

  • Secure apps, servers, firewalls, Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs), etc

  • Automate log analysis and reporting using Splunk
